Civic Experience

  • 3 terms on Gloucester City Council, 1 term as President.

  • 6 years on Gloucester Planning Board, 2 as Chair.

  • 10 Years as a Trustee of Addison Gilbert/Beverly Hospitals; Chair of the Quality and Patient Experience Committee.

  • Served on the Boards of Sawyer Free Library and Wellspring House.

Professional Experience

  • Began transportation career as a train conductor on the Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW).

  • Served as General Manager of Boston’s Commuter Rail.

  • 40 year management career serving as Vice President-Labor Relations and Senior Vice President-Operations at C&NW (trains), Great Lakes Transportation (ships and trains), Maersk SeaLand (ships), RailAmerica (trains) and Central Maine & Quebec Railway (trains).

Personal Experience

  • Educated in the Gloucester Public Schools: GHS Class of 1969.

  • Earned Bachelors and Masters of Business Administration from Northwestern University (Chicago).

  • Grandfather Paul immigrated from Sweden to work in Cape Ann granite quarries, later became City Assessor of Gloucester.

  • Father Robert practiced surgery at Addison Gilbert for 35 years; served as Chairman of the Gloucester Board of Health.
